You have a clear idea of your collection, you dream of turning your sketch into a real garment, and maybe you’ve already found a supplier (maybe even us at Mida!).

But... are you really ready to start? Do you really know how to start knitwear production?

Starting the sampling phase without the right information can lead to wasted time, money, and disappointments.
In this article, we guide you through 10 essential questions every designer should ask themselves before kicking off the first sample.

1 What is the purpose of my garment?
Before talking about stitches or yarns, ask yourself, what does this piece really need to do? Is it meant for sale, a capsule to test, a presentation, or a runway show? Knowing the end goal helps us choose the right materials, finishes, and techniques. Don’t worry if you’re not 100% clear yet: by talking it through, we’ll find the right focus to kick off.

2 Who is the collection for?
It may sound obvious, but this is a key question: who is your brand talking to?
Men, women, kids? Luxury or accessible market? Ethical fashion or performance wear? When you know your audience, we can give more targeted advice on fit, yarns, style, and pricing. You don’t need your ideal customer perfectly drawn out — even a chat is enough to understand together.

3 Do I have a clear idea of the garment’s technical details?
You don’t need a perfect tech pack at all costs, but it helps to have some basic details in mind:What fit do you want? What kind of neckline or finishing? Any specific stitch pattern? The more you tell us, the better we can turn your idea into reality. And if some things feel unclear, we’re here to help clarify them.

4 Do I have at least a visual draft or references?
A drawing, a photo, a sketch by hand, or even a garment you love: any visual reference is valuable. You don’t need to be an illustrator, just a starting point to speak the same language.Think of it as “opening the door” to your idea, we’ll step in carefully and build it together.

5 Have I thought about the type of yarn?
Natural or synthetic? Lightweight or warm? Certified or technical? If you have a look or a feel in mind, that already gives us a direction. Don’t worry if you don’t know all the fibers: we’ll guide you through the best options, even sending you test pieces to touch and feel.

6 Do I have a realistic idea of my budget?
You don’t need an exact number down to the last cent, but it helps to know your investment range. This lets us offer choices that fit, there are smart solutions for every budget, and our job is to optimize without ever compromising quality.

7 How many pieces or sizes am I thinking to produce (even roughly)?
Knowing from the start whether you want just one sample or already 10 pieces in 3 sizes changes timing, material choices, and costs. You don’t have to have everything defined, but discussing it early helps us plan better. And yes, you can start with just one. Literally.

8 Do I have a deadline to meet?
A fashion show, a campaign, a trade fair? Or maybe you just want to launch by a certain season? Tell us, timing is key in any production. Knowing your schedule lets us be realistic, precise, and fast if needed. So we can build a calendar tailored just for you.

9 Do I know how I prefer to communicate with my supplier?
Email, video calls, WhatsApp? In Italian or English? Good communication is the foundation of every collaboration. Knowing your preferred way helps us make you feel followed, heard, and never left waiting. We’re flexible, and we truly speak your language.

10 Do I already have a tech pack or know I’ll need to build one?
A tech pack is the document that translates ideas into concrete instructions for the machines. But it’s not something we ask for right away, and you don’t have to know how to do it alone. We know it can seem technical and complicated, but we’ll show you everything step by step. In fact, we already made an Instagram post about this, and if you don’t want to do it alone, our graphic team can create it for you.

Did you answer “yes” to at least 6 of these questions?
Then you’re already much more ready than you think. The rest... we’ll build together.
